What's the story/history behind this coin and what would be a reasonable price for a 'G' mint Gallipoli?

Gallipoli

I will not go into the history of Gallipoli as there are a fair few enteries on google that chronicles this chapter in Australian/New Zealand war history.

The Royal Australian Mint commemorated this event by the issue of several coins this year, the most notable of which is the one with the "G" Mint mark (first time this MM is found on an Aussie coin). No more than 40,000 coins were issued bearing this MM from the fixed presses at the Mint. The one that collectors are chasing are the ones that were issued at the AWM (Australian War Memorial)under the MYO (Mint Your Own) program, that is you mint your own coin. It is estimated about 3,000 MYO coins were minted by the mobile presses. With an issue price of AUD$2.75, these coins are now selling upwards of AUD$40.00. Have a look here of the difference between the mass produced ones from the Mint and the MYO's. The top MM is the mass produced one and the bottom one is a MYO, it is thicker and I would venture to say the font used to produce the MM is different.

Gallipoli

BTW,the Gallipoli dollar was also produced with other MM's. "B" for the Brisbane show,"S" for Sydney,"C" for Canberra and "M" for Melbourne. A silver proof version was also issued. To add further confusion to this series,MYO's were also minted with the B,M & S Mint Marks. Just another ploy by the Mint to ensure we are always "poor"....

I have the Gallipoli $1 coin as I jumped on it early while they were still affordable. But, I sure DON'T have the one off of the portable press so NOW I will have to find that!!! I managed to get ALL the $1 coins minted in Australia since 2002 to the present in one packaged deal and I didn't have a clue there were so many mints DOWN UNDER? None the less I can now make my move on back in time or just continue from where I am. Now lim118 just how hard would one of those mobile G mint marks be to obtain?

Terry...there are few of the "G" MYO's listed on ebay Aust...been selling of late around the AUD$40.00 mark.

As for Mints, we now only have two physical Mints, namely The Royal Australian Mint (RAM) and the Perth Mint (PM). The others are not coins produced by Mints in Sydney,Brisbane etc. The RAM mints those MYO coins (minus the MM) and loads them into portable presses. The coins are then "produced" at Coin Shows/Events where the MM is then added onto the coin by yourself after you have cough up the $2.75. Needless to say, lining up to make one of those coins at those shows (limit of 5)has driven up the price of the MYO's. I am lucky in that even though I live out in the sticks, there are members of the ACTB Forum who have helped out other members by buying those coins.

The Circulating Aussie dollar is without a shadow of a doubt the most collected denomination by Aussie decimal collectors.Introduced into our coinage system in 1984, there are a fair number of them to collect to make up the whole series. The VC Commemorative(Victoria Cross) dollar is by far the most expensive one to collect (around AUD$190.00).

Gallipoli

Cheers....Lim

Forget the Bills, Forget the Mrs, Forget the kids....Coins are more important.... Is it any wonder why we Aussie collectors live on just "bread and water" ......

Okay, pass the bread and water as I need it, I want it! I do have a commemorative to the Battle of Sunda Strait but I believe it is a mere dollar coin on a commemorative card. The bell off of the USS Houston is on one side, if I remember correctly, but would have to dig it out to make sure.
I see lim118 is up to his old tricks again and have now figured out he is an undercover agent for the Royal Austrailian Mint and its his job to increase revenue by baiting us U.S. collectors? Job well done so far and the Aussie economy has to be booming!
