Received my 2017 Our Home and Native Land silver dollar a few days ago - it is the "all silver" version of the selectively gold-plated dollar coin that was included in the Special Edition Pure Silver Proof Set that was released last September.

Even without the gold highlights, I think the coin looks good. I wasn't too thrilled with the artist depictions of the coin; I felt they made the SD's design appear very flat and two-dimensional. I'm happy to say that, in hand, the coin definitely has more depth. The design is not very detailed, however, and it features several large flat areas (e.g., map, flag) so its overall visual impression (at least to my eyes) remains closer to that of an illustration vs. a sculpted piece of art.

It's interesting to note that the RCM considers this coin a Special Edition SD release and not its traditional "regular edition" issue that has been released in January each year for as long as I can remember; at least this is what is indicated on the RCM web site as a response to a question about the coin. I wonder if this means a second 2017 SD will be included in the February release or if it will be held until later in the year.

In any case, it's a nice addition to my collection and pairs well with the gold-plated version.

Note: The golden colour that appears on the center section of the flag is an artifact of my imaging vs. actual gold-tone on the coin.

A hard one to say no to, even though it does look awfully flat, as you mentioned. Congratulations on nailing one down.

I need some really "special edition SD" for 150 Canada Anniversary.
Let's see later...

Thank you, Commems, for showcasing the coin.

Certainly a nice piece, but I agree on the 2-D part. Nice addition to your collection!

Outstanding photos once again! Both the gold and silver likely represent a very interesting contrast but alas, I shall never know because the parameters of my SD collection include any gold-plated version but if so, then exclude an all-silver cousin in the exact same design.

I took your lead commems and ordered one of each of these 150 dollars.

Also, I just read that there is to be another double dated SD in March. MTS wrote "Silver Dollar 1867-2017 - a woman with quill and British North America Act"

I was hoping it might be the goose that was proposed last year as seen here:

@CC-Ottawa: I'm with you re: the SD with the goose design - done right, it could be one very attractive coin with a strong historical theme - I like the way the various provincial/territorial flags are presented in the background.

The year has just begun! Maybe it will still become a reality.
