WOW, did the brillo pad come with it ? Looks like it may have had AU details at one time....I don't know what this might "net" grade down to. That is to bad, I have seen ALOT of Barber coinage this past week, and sad to say there are alot of them that resemble this...and worse. Not a really bad looking coin, but those scratches are very distracting. Probably was toned nice before they ruined it. Always hold it 2 feet away from you eyes and it'll be fine....

How do I determine if it's a Large Letter or not?

It is not the large letters variety. The easy diagnostic is that the D in UNITED and S in STATES almost touch on an 1830 LL.
