To me it appears that the dime was dropped on its edge. Thus the rim was pressed into a new position. PSD.

I agree it looks like damage. The first pic shows the flattened rim. one for recirculation.

I have been thinking about this coin. The reason that I mentioned "damage" in the title is because the fin (edge or outside of the design rim) looked straight. As these photos will show, that appears to have been caused by a hit resulting in a small gouge on the edge of the coin.

I have noticed that coins, when sustaining a larger contact mark on the edge, will show a raised area on the rim - similar to a rim Cud. It is metal pushed up by the hit on the edge.

However, this coin shows a "dip" (not a bulge) in the rim adjacent to this small hit. I cannot make sense out of that!

So I am still looking for an adequate explanation?

When looking at your images the areas that should be flat are not. (forth image) The damage from being dropped that area. Notice the uneven line the first image has.
On the fifth image where the rim should be round, it has a flat spot where the rim raises upwards. This is from the damage from being dropped. The weakened rim on the right side of the coin looks like it was worn off the rim of the coin. (second image) You can see the striation lines on the rim. I'm just seeing damage on your coin.
