Yours was graded Friday afternoon and the grader wanted to get out of there for the weekend. My opinion is they should grade about the same at F-12.

Awfully close, must admit. Yours may perhaps have been "netted" a grade for the rim issues. But I think we'd all agree that this sort of situation is hardly uncommon for TPG holders - it's what "cracking" is all about.

I deleated my previous post. Yours absolutely looks better than the "Fine" graded coin and far nicer surfaces for sure. I had the same B-5 and sold it last year it was in a cleaned VF holder. It's all about grader discretion. This coin had some scuffs on the cheek too.

I'm far from an expert on this, but most of the differences do appear to be on the dentils/rim. The relative damage is pretty balanced. The only significant detail I can see in the 12 that's not on the 10 is in the lower part of the hair, but that could just be contrast -- yours is pretty even in color and tone while the 12 is darker in places and makes the details stand out more, where they exist.

Your example is exactly why you buy the coin and not the grade on the holder.

Close with the rim snags on the VG being the only notable difference. But we are talking a 10 versus a 12, not a 10 versus a 20.

Right. Learn to grade and come to trust yourself. Shame about the qualifier on bandsdean's example - what a super coin. But if nothing else, it clearly shows unarguable VF details.

I'd say that yours was downgraded due to the left side of the obverse. Some weakness and rim dings show there. Close? Yes, but I think they got yours and the other right.
