The finish looks almost brushed on, but I'm not very knowledgeable on old coppers.

Yes, it appears to have been cleaned in my opinion, and the cleaning brought out and amplified the wood-graining effect of the metal alloy. It's not unattractive as far as I'm concerned, but you have probably noticed the darker areas left behind after the cleaning. I'd be concerned about this coin.

I'll vote for a cleaning as well... That said it's an attractive coin.
