I've just seen this interesting news on a French coin magazine website:

http://www.monnaie-magazine.com/eur...atican-2017/

It appears that Pope Francis no longer wishes his portrait to appear on coins, and has requested it to be replaced on all denominations by the Vatican coat-of-arms. This will be the fifth different obverse design on Vatican euro coins!

Is that the current record for most designs by one nation? I have plenty of trouble finding any of the designs, even more so with 5 sets...

Thanks for sharing though NumisRob!

Does anyone have any idea where to buy these coins in the Vatican City? I will be heading over there in a few months.

maybe in the museum shop .There is a small numismatic section in the basement,if my memory is good , so I suppose they will sell also numismatic sets.I have a euro-catalogue of 2014 , and the prices are very expensive : 2013/€125 , 2012/€180 ...2002/€825 for mint state sets, for proof : from €300 to €4500 .albert

Well that's interesting. And I actually like the whole 'no portrait' thing. Reminds me of what I've read about principles of George Washington.

EDIT: If I'm not mistaken San Marino will also change their national side this year. But that's because it's been 15 years of this one, so they are allowed to do it. Sooner or later other countries will do the same, I guess.

I visited the Vatican City in May 2016. The sets are for sale in the basement shop that Antwerpen2306 mentioned, and also in several other shops just outside - the prices for more recent year sets were around €70 - 80. In the Post Office inside the Vatican (near the Coin & Stamp Museum, which is well worth visiting), the staff were giving Vatican 50c coins in change when you made a purchase.
