I normally submit my top bid on every ebay offer. I don't mind losing but I'm not sure what to do when I submit a bid on an item I really want to win but it is too low when going against a bidder with MANY, MANY bid retractions.

I move on especially if they have a high percentage of bids with that seller. Definitely a warning sign.

Just stay the course and put in your top bid (don't get caught up into bidding fever). If it didn't mean much, I'd move on, but sounds like you want this coin. Figure out the max you'd pay (which could be more than market value depending on how bad you need it). You know the drill it sounds like. Not sure what you're looking at, but there are probably more fish in the sea.

Unless it's a truly rare coin, or rare in the grade you are after, there aren't too many US coins that you have to wait terribly long for. There are exceptions, but without a specific about what you are after, it's tough to tell. I'd keep with you normal routine, bid as best you can, and wait for the results.

Quote: MANY, MANY bid retractions. I've come across a few listings where the top bidder has over 20 bid retractions. I'm not sure what they're doing but I just move on. If one of the bidders has a 100% bids or close to it with the seller I move on. If something doesn't seem right with either one of those scenarios I just move on. I need to fill comfortable with the listing before I bid, but then again that's just me.

I recently bid in an auction I really wanted to win, but was outbid by quite a large amount at the end which surprised me. I was pretty disappointed but relieved at the same time, figuring that the winner had overpaid anyways.
I got an email from the seller a day later offering me the same item since the winner backed out of the deal. They wanted my maximum bid on the item and instead I offered one bid above the third highest bidder since the winner's bids were not solid. The seller accepted and I bought the item.

I don't buy a ton of stuff on ebay, but it sounds like a shill to me. If a bidder has a large amount of bids with one seller or many retracted bids, I suspect that they may have less than honest intentions. I would just move on and keep looking, Your patience will eventually be rewarded!

I have a bid in my mine, place that bid , If I win good if I lose I hunt another. If I really want it I will bid a little higher then wait, some I win more of them I lose.
ain't life grand.
