Today at the grocery store, I received a 1916 Wheat penny that looks like it's had one heck of a ride these past 101 years. Didn't see any mint mark, just curious if, other than the age, there's anything special about it. I mean it looks really special, has a cool patina, and was a thrill to find with my standard coins. Really do enjoy looking through all my coins at dates, and then just through them on my "altar" at home. Look forward to learning more on these forums. Hope everyone is well, and any feedback is appreciated. Thanks! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I've never received anything that old in change! It kind of looks like a "woody" to me (wood grain-like stripes caused by improperly mixed alloy). That, I don't think, would demand a premium but simply based on age it's definitely worth more than $0.01. Good find! P.S. no mint mark means it was struck at the Philadelphia mint.

Wow, thanks for the welcome and all the helpful information!! Was wondering what those grain marks were all about, seemed too perfectly parallel to just be abrasions. Can't wait to learn more on here!

Nice find! Glad the coin was found by someone who wanted it. I always get ridiculously happy when I find a nice old coin like that because it just doesn't seem possible -- but then -- there it is! Enjoy!

I've watched my change for years and a 1916 wheat has never been a coin I received back. Congrats!
