Hello all,

Been weighing some of my wheat cents I've collected from CRH.

Stumbled upon a 1936 Wheat cent that I believe should weigh: 3.11 grams.

Surprisingly, it weighs 2.7 grams even?

Could this be a cent struck on a foreign planchet?

Or am I missing something here...

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Gula

Maybe a rolled thin planchet. Are you sure your scale is accurate?

Reverse looks corroded. If so, that's how the weight was lost.

Wear can take up to 15% off the weight of the coin. If you have a fairly lightweight cent, and subtract say 10% of the weight, it makes sense.

Fair enough.

Didn't pay much attention to the reverse of the coin.

I was aware of the tarnish on the obverse and didn't really think much of it.

Makes a lot of sense.

Thanks

Though it isn't extremely corroded.

Makes a lot of sense.

So much to look for...

Looks like a lamination on the reverse. Coin wear?

I would send it in. That's the weight of a sterile. I was just going through my coins and found a 62D that weighs 2.7 even but it looks not like copper ar all. Bronze maybe?

No don't send it in unless you have money to burn. Even if they did decide it was a rolled thin planchet error, why pay $30 to $50 to slab a coin that would end up being worth a dollar or two.

Don't slab it! Not worth the grading fees at all. I agree that normal circulation wear and tear has reduced the weight of your coin.
