The "over-polished" or "buffed" reverse varieties are among my very favorite, and I could not help but share. There is just so much going on with this type of variety, and impossible to miss. Seems there are a lot of "clash junkies" out there, and these "collapsed die" (more commonly referred to as over-polished or buffed) type varieties simply don't get the attention they deserve. To each his own I guess! This one is possibly my all time favorite, with only two contenders that come to mind. This is the 1880-O VAM-78 Early Die State. The other two great ones are 1891-O VAM-19 (been a while since I've seen one, so tough to say which I truly love more), and the 1883-O VAM-1C3 with full break simply because I am a sucker for 1883-O and that is one HARD coin to find! For now I am sticking with this VAM-78 EDS to be my favorite. Photos courtesy of VSS (messydesk). Enjoy ;)

I'm always on the lookout but these are so "in your face" that a dealer with the smallest of VAM knowledge or even a good instinct for the out of the ordinary pull them until they figure out what they are then put a huge number on them. And people think say a thornhead is tuff because it has an "in your face" feature lol

The funny thing about that Chris, is the dealer that I picked this from, as well as at least one 1883-O VAM-1C1 is somewhat knowledgeable in VAMs. Mainly the mainstream VAMs like Scarface, Hotlips, the E clashes, first die pair, etc. When I saw that V78 EDS my heart skipped a beat lol.
Still looking for that elusive VAM-19 though... cool photo Russ! Once I get the V78 back I will try to attempt a similar type shot.
Good news is JB@VSS will be creating a GIF for the V78 EDS. It seemed like an interesting idea, and I hope it was a good one! If GIFs can be posted on this site I will post it once it is done. Right now the coin is off to PCGS though so it may be a while until I can get that up.

It is already up (Just the Rev die shot), this is the top pop in this variety and I think its an MS coin not an AU-58. The obv die is so much different then the rev die, I think the graders are thinking net grade!

I am not seeing the photo above on the page. Ha, funny about the net grade thing. I could easily see that. Graders were not sure where to go with that one! Is yours PL ish, or is it just the lighting giving that effect?

The reveres is PL'ish and the OB is a normal die type

Nice one Nate. I managed to cheery pick a V45 recently and now need to find a V78. Still looking for that elusive V1C3 as well.... Russ, that V19 is crazy! Just added to my VAM bucket list.

Yeah. Is it just me or does that v19 remind anyone else of Van Gogh's Starry Night painting

Funny comment Chris, but I see where you are coming from. Dave, that VAM-1C3 will be very hard to find. I am beginning to think I need to start looking in melt bins to find a full blown 1C3. As for the VAM-19... yeah, that thing is crazy. I was beginning to compare the VAM-78 to the VAM-19, but I am not quite sure if it is just or not. Per LVA the VAM-78 is one of the most extreme "buffed" varieties in the early $ series. VAM 19 may take the cake though. I will not pass judgment until I have a VAM-19 in hand to compare side by side. They are both awesome.

I own both coins, I have 2 1880 O V-78. I am here to tell you the 1891 V-19 is far and away more collapsed then the 1880 O V-78. I bought one of my 1880 O coins at FUN about 3 years ago Raw. The dealer had it priced at AU money and cleaned. It graded MS-62, so the look on the reverse can help you buy one on the cheap from time to time.

Well I will just have to take your work for it Russ! Are your VAM-78s the EDS version?

Both are late die states and while this particular die variant is just amazing on both coins. Having both in hand, the 1891 O is much more dramatic, do to the PL'ish surface of the coin, the "Messed up die Jumps out or off the fields"
