I won a 1835 Classic Head Quarter Eagle at a recent auction. When I received the coin and photographed both sides, I noticed some smudges on the reverse of the coin. I went back to see the reverse image supplied by the auction house, and those smudges were not there. I called and was told to use a cleaner-that didn't work. Believe me I rubbed until I thought I would penetrate the plastic! Their final response was they do not alter their photos in any way. I have sent the coin to PCGS for re holder. I have supplied images for the reverse. The first one is from the auction house, and the second is mine. Have a look and respond.

Well, all the dings and scratches look to be in the same places on both coins. The damage on the holder by the D in UNITED match. The smudge must be on the slab. John1

Their photo is actually a scan from what it appears.

You say there are smudges on the reverse of the coin? Is it actually just a scuffed slab? The slab may have gotten scuffed in handling/packaging after the images were taken and is a relatively easy fix. If the coin is damaged it's another issue entirely.

We can't tell from the original post whether you might think the smudges are on the coin or the slab. Are thinking the auction house hid smudges on the slab? Or are the smudges on the coin and you are annoyed that the angle of the scan didn't reveal them?

Yes, that seems to be the issue. Is the smudge on the coin or the slab? Initally you said the smudges are on the coin, but am assuming that if you rubbed the slab, and are sending it in for reholdering, you must think the slab is faulty, but just an assumption.

You've done what you could and you will be happier with a plastic that isn't a problem.
On better coins, such as this, a smudged holder can cause a few potential bidders not to want to bid.
Yes, we are all supposed to base our buying decisions on the coin, not the holder. But when you are looking for a lovely coin, you don't want to have to deal with scratched up holders.
I want to see the coin, unhindered. I agree with your decision to reholder this one.e.

I wouldn't care too much about a $10 reholdering fee.

Sorry that I might of mislead on my initial post. I don't believe the smudges are on the coin. The cost to re holder is upwards of $50 when you figure in my shipping, re holder fee of $12, handling fee $10, and return shipping $31.45

BH1964, Slab-Renew? Never heard of this. I do not see this service on the PCGS Submission Form. Ham

These products are available retail. Slab renew, plastic headlight polish, cd polish, all basically the same. If you want to tackle it yourself, it might take some elbow grease but you can get slabs to polish up.

It has been 7 days and the coin is "Still in Process" at PCGS. Suppose to be 5 day turnaround. Ham

BH1964, I must of had a brain thing. Slab-Renew would be an application to remove smudges. Ham

PCGS has finally shipped the coin. As soon as I receive it, I post a photo of the reverse. Ham

Received the coin back from PCGS in a new holder. $53.45 charge for re holder. No smudges. I don't know what caused the smudges on the holder in the first place, but I could not remove them. Below is a photo of the coin in its new holder.
