Hey
As many of you know I'm new to the forum and generally new to coin collecting, I've only been going at it for 8 or 9 years. I'm only 19 years old and I know many have you have been collecting longer than I've been alive. Well anyways I read that the place to get great deals on coins would be estate sales and garage sales. Well, I live in Michigan and there's still snow on the ground so there won't be any garage sales for a while. I was wondering where I'd hear about estate sales?
Thanks

There should be a section in your local newspapers classifieds.

The nice thing about craiglist is you actually get to meet with the people, and see all the coins first hand, before purchasing.

If you're new and enthusiastic - check some estate sales out. As Walker4 said, you can meet people and make contacts.
As far as getting deals - probably not unless you are in some totally backwater place of the US - and I don't think they really exist anymore. Not only dealers, but individual collectors hunt down estate sales.
But give it a try!! As long as you don't take time off of work or spend too much on gas, it's better than going to Hardees!!

I go to estate sales (auctions) all of the time...... Each and every time.....I've gone to the internet and search "auctions" in my area (and by my area, I mean within a two hour drive).......You do that and all kinds of auctions will come up. Search through the "auction bills" and find whether or not there are going to be coins available at a particular auction. Most times estate auctions will NOT have coins.....but you have to look very thoroughly.......but there are a lot of things to be wary of at "estate auctions" or "coin auctions"......and that is people willing to pay far above and beyond what a particular coin is worth......for no other reason than they just want it and don't care about going over or WAY OVER what it's worth.....be careful you don't get what they call ....... auction fever... I just went to an estate auction last weekend.......and EVERY coin sold there was " over it's value".......but I bought some anyway and didn't get hurt too bad.....but it can be risky ! Just have your "ceiling" that you'll pay ready and identified BEFORE the auction begins and stick to it, then you'll be fine!...

I live in michigan and just went to an auction a couple weeks ago and there were a ton of silver coins that went for under melt(ie. 3 silver canadian dollars for $10, and I couldn't get my number up fast enough to buy them ). Only got a few but it was still fun. I just watch the newspaper to see if there are auctions. Jser

I have never had any luck getting anything decent at an estate sale. My mom lives in an area that seems to have a lot more than my area. She collects antique tea sets. She's always coming back with something she needs or wants.
Me? I'd rather hit up a flea market or barter show for coins. Sometimes you see someone there that has pennies or morgans.
Just my thoughts

I live in KC and I just go to the KC star's website and look in the classifieds. on a bad week end there will be 5-10 estate/garage sales. I have yet to see the summer when there are tons. (as my neighbor who does it all the time claims.) But so far, the coins go very early, but you can find some fantastic bargins on great furniture later in the weekend. And if it is later in the weekend, never pay what they are asking, make a fair offer and see if they take it.
I kinda needed a washer, and I was back at a place picking something up, everything was half off marked price, I picked out a washer that was marked $130. I said "I'll give you $40 for the washer." The guy hesitated about 1.5 seconds before he said, "load it up."

GO FOR IT!
Estate sales/garage sales/flea markets are like coin roll hunting. You find something every so often. I have found some great deals, Lincoln memorial set 1959 - 1982 for 5 dollars PD, 3 penny whitmans and a jefferson whitman for 10 bucks (there were a fair amount of teens in the pennies but none of the super key dates but still worth 10 bucks). As well as other silver coin purchases for about melt.
I head out every Saturday to the local swap meet and usually find something decent every 2 - 3 times. it is all a nunmbers game, the more you go the better chance you have of finding a deal.
