I'm trying to consider my investment options here....I mean, given that prices are so high for some key dates, is it likely that they are going to surge MUCH higher given that they're getting out of reach for a lot of people?

Also, what key dates would you suggest, preferably stuff that isn't outrageously expensive....yet. This Morgan dollar I bought 5-6 years ago for about $120 is going for $400+ now it seems, so that was a pretty good pick though I had no idea(1899)

I have money right now and likely will have well over ten thousand in less than a year, so I guess it's okay to post expensive stuff too, but for now it's not really an option for me...

1856 Flying Eagle cent in EF or above would take all your 10k and more.
Whatever you do, buy only certified coins from known dealers. Also, use Teletrade or Heritage if possible instead of ebay if you are buying on the net. Too many fakes and scams out there.

For just investment the keys are the best. They will only go up in value. It just takes time is all.

Certified coins from legit companies and sellers. let us know if you ever need any help with this

I have about $1400 to spare and absolutely NOTHING to do with it. I'm not materialistic and rarely, if ever, buy most things that typical college kids do. I'd of course look for a good deal, or even a trade if those can be done.

What's the 'average' time for a 50% increase in price? Because I know some of my stuff has shot up a lot but I really don't know the 'average'.

To get something undergraded would be really nice too, any recommendations besides the green PCI holders (I'm guessing these aren't around much any more)

You can find the old PCGS holders being sold all the time. There are lots of good keys in that price range. Buy a key date of a series you like.

I question if coin values are going very far up in the next few years. It seems like Americans have better things to spend their money on lately. Stuff like gas and food. I'm thinking there may even be a flood of coins coming to the market as numismatists scramble to pay the bills and the hype created by the State Quarter program fades.

However, I am not going to liquidate my collection to pay the bills since I have prepared myself for the "rainy days" that might come. Worst case, I will take my collection to the poor house with me! I need something to keep me happy if I end up there.

Actually, I am hoping for a price dip so I can complete my LHC collection at the price I would have gotten if I completed ten years ago!

The dealers I frequent all say they have been flooded with people selling their collections. Haven't noticed prices being affected by this yet.

Either they are paying top-dollar to the sellers, or they are making some nice profits!

100% It's always best to buy the keys first and then the commons. Yes, they will cost you alot more this way, but you will gain a larger return and they will be more liquid than a bunch of common morgans. This example isn't 100% accurate but this will give you a good idea: 1916-D Merc dime 1999 RedBook value in VF20 $1600 ebay 1916-D VF DETAILS merc $3500.

best investment coins: any date/variety with less than 10 known
you can pretty much name your price when you want to sell.

Just because you could name your price for a coin doesn't mean it's going to sell if the buyer doesn't want to pay for it.

I like the 55 Lincoln DDO MS60+, or 72 Lincoln DDO #1, MS64-66 as a less expensive alternative. And 1995 Lincoln DDO MS 67-68 as a reasonable low price ( less than 200)one. PCGS or NCG. Buy extra, keep best, sell rest.

It could happen. There's been a lot of hype and resulting volatility with anything perceived as an "investment".

Checking price trends, I've noticed key Lincolns in recent years have been hotter than long-term. Probably other coin series have performed the same. Personally, I'd skip coins in grades that are hyped as "investments", and pick a series that interests you in below-MS grades. The first thing you might buy are a few good books to research the series in detail. The more you know, the less likely you'll be taken by forgeries, and you might even spot some rare coins others miss!
