My family recently inherited a collection of Chinese coins.Dad was stationed in China in 1945 and brought these back. We don't know if they are real or souvenir items for the soldiers.

I think this is a type of fake called a "missionary counterfeit," so named because missionaries of the late 19th and early 20th century would often pick these up an take then home. They all have a black patina and thick, lifeless character strokes.

These were very common around 1900. When I looked at the 1894 inventory of their Chinese Numismatic collection, they had dozens of these fakes.

I had a feeling they looked a bit too nice! Still kind of interesting though. I'll have the rest looked at I expect but not anticipating anything different! Thanks.
