This was on the bay - buy it now for $1,600. I am looking for an XF40 or better example. The seller described it as EF, but priced it like it was F12. It is a raw coin. I was really considering pulling the trigger even though I thought it was VF30-35, and below my target grade. I was thinking about it and someone else pulled the trigger before I did and it was gone. What are your thoughts on grade and should I have pulled the trigger right away? Coin has extensive damage to the obverse rims and in the left field to the right of and around S1-S3, a scratched face, and the reverse has rim damage + a hole at the top at TE in STATES. There are no edge shots to check for rim filing, and the overall appearance of the coin is not very reassuring.
I think this is a details/problem coin and the price it sold for is probably average to slightly high for an uncertified example with some obvious issues.

I don't like the color balance of the images. They have likely been played with and don't represent the natural color. That said it appears to be a lot of coin for 16 bills but there's something questionable about it. The 9 & 8 in the date aren't positioned correctly and are oddly shaped for a pointed 9 with 4 vertical lines. I would have passed too.

I have to hand it to you NS, you've got a brass pair. I would never monkey around with raw coins on ebay.

I'm still a newb, but I believe in learning, preparing, planning, acting and sometimes making mistakes. Gotta learn to walk on your own some time. All of you here have helped a lot. Thank you.

Thanks Barberman. I saw the coin. It looks like a good value based on the certified grade, but the surfaces don't look original to me. Also, the "pluribus" in the motto seems half washed out. What do you think caused that?

Sorry. I was looking at a 1829 bust half graded by NGC au55 for $303. Thought it was a quarter. Can you send me a link to the listing you were referring to? Thanks. I do need a Capped Bust quarter and you seem to be a specialist.

I thought you meant to say you had a coin for sale now on the bay. Sorry for the confusion. I thought that coin was raw. Is it now certified? If so, which service did you use and what grade did it get?

Check my previous post on the 1911 Barber Proof I gobbled up the proof! Should I get the CBQ?
