I bought on ebay a few years ago an 1851-O 3 cent silver piece whose mint mark is way smaller than those I see doing an internet search. It was sold as 1851-P. I didn't even notice until this morning it had an "O"! Does anyone have knowledge of this?

I don't think that's a mintmark, I believe it's a contact mark.

Wish I had better news. Its a little off location. Way off the size and shape for an O. I think its just damage on the coin.

for comparison, here is a current auction for a 1851-O:

I think you're right, it's some kind of contact mark, possibly on purpose to make it look like an "o".
