Am I the only one thinking there maybe an opportunity with this set? Even in the short term, it seems it could be pieced out at a small profit, to say nothing of chances should you happen into a PF70 coin.

Here's what it includes:

Presidential $1 Reverse Proof Coin
American Eagle One Ounce Silver Proof Coin
Bronze Medal - 1&1/2 inch Ronald & Nancy Reagan
$68.95 direct from US Mint (16PA)
As of 01/22/2017 the Mint's figures show 40,511 sold. Mintage is limited to 150,000.

So, what's it worth?

The ASE proof is the easiest one to price. It's the anniversary proof with the edge lettering. Already these are going for $45-50 on ebay even ungraded. PF70 graded (mostly first strike, early release, blah blah) are well over that at $150. If you luck out and manage a PF70 you could double your purchase price, even after grading, and still have the other coins. Let's call it $40 for estimation purposes...

This leaves us $28.95 in the hole. Call it $35 if you want to account for S&H costs from the mint.

Let's look at the reverse proof next. This set is the only way to get the Reagan reverse proof. On ebay these are going for $25-35 currently. Again, PF70 graded are commanding premiums.

That makes an immediate resale pretty close to a break even proposition, and we're still holding the bronze medal. There's a wide range of pricing on recent sales, but generally $5-15. Whatever we call it, it's pretty much pure profit, but this is clearly the least desirable of the three pieces.

So it seems to me, you could likely buy and flip this set piecemeal at a small profit, with at least two chances at lucking out on a PF70 and roughly doubling your money. How the RP and Medal do in value over time is a question, but I think the RP's novelty and relatively low mintage give it some potential.

Of course, I haven't accounted for grading costs, nor shipping and transaction costs, and "First Strike" designation has closed, but those are likely only factors should we seriously attempt a quick flip. The decision to grade or not can be better reached after taking delivery and checking out the coins.

I'm not quite sure about the long term value here, but Reagan was a popular President whom many hold a fondness for, and those born during his administration may not have entered collecting in the numbers that could come. Reverse proofs are also just plain pretty, and despite increasing issues relatively rare. Could this wind up being a key or semi key to a Reverse Proof set? At a max mintage of 150k, it seems like it's got decent chances to appreciate.

Mostly, I think this is an exercise in convincing myself to pull the trigger.. heh

Go ahead and pull the trigger. No argument from me.

I bought the entire series of the Coin and Chronicles sets and I like the reverse proof coins.

Same here.

I have no intention of breaking them apart though.

In any cost/potential profit analysis you conduct, you should assume the coins you submit for grading will come back as 69s vs. 70s. Such a result is much more likely and typically changes the analysis significantly. Getting a 70 back should be considered an exception and bonus not a baseline scenario.

@commems I agree entirely. I tried to do just that, and my numbers reflect prices for ungraded examples that sold recently.

Even at 69 (or ungraded) it seems like there's potential for some small upside on an immediate flip which I don't entirely understand; why don't those buyers just buy the set?!

I'm not sure I'd flip the whole thing, or even parts (unless I got two maybe) but it seems to me like a useful way to think about the relative value for the price. I'd probably be most likely to sell off the ASE (since I have others) but keep the reverse proof and bronze medal at a pretty small net cost.

Well....maybe you MIGHT break even after grading costs are added.

(Using NGC as an example)

Most recent sales of graded coins from the set have the Early Release label. As you said this is not possible now so those will have a lower POP and better premium.

Cost of grading for one set will be around $85-90 including shipping both ways. It is required that you submit an unopened Mint shipping box for grading...no peeking and choosing. Also all 3 coins have to be submitted.

The last 69 graded Early Release set sold for $115 shipped (the set ungraded costs $74 shipped from the Mint) Expecting a 70? Only around 7% get that grade. Remember...no peekee

What really kills the idea is a mintage possibility of 150k...waaay up there compared to Ike and Truman at 17k

Buy it if you like the set and plan to keep and not sell it....I wouldn't grade it though

@Foxwoods From what I've read, sending the unopened mint shipping box is only necessary for First Strike, so that wouldn't be a barrier here since that bird has flown already anyhow. Shipping costs both ways for grading are something I hadn't accounted for, but I've been trying to focus my (rough) estimates on ungraded sales, or at worst lowballing the average of graded (69) examples. I think that still makes it pretty much break even. The added premium for 'First Strike' labels could be a factor, though I think it's crazy people would pay any premium for that gimmick....

I wasn't really advocating for buying them and splitting them up immediately. If there IS a profit to be had there it's either luck of the draw on 70s, or so minimal as to not be worth the effort. The point of the exercise is more to show that there seems to be value here that isn't being recognized. It's got to be a rare case where a break even flip on mint pricing for a limited set that's only at about 1/3rd it's mintage figure would even be something we could debate.

If I buy this, it'll be for the reverse proof, but I'll take some comfort in that ASE increasing the value for the money. Still, I've got a number of items on my wishlist that interest me more, so I'll probably let this pass by.

If you want the Coin & Chronicles label (pedigree) you will have to submit an unopened box and have all three items graded.

Quote:
The coins and medal in this set may be submitted to NGC for the "COIN AND CHRONICLES SET" pedigree. In addition, both the coins and medal will be eligible for Early Releases or First Releases if received by NGC within 30 days of its release for an additional fee of $15 per coin. Check the NGC website for Early Releases/First Releases cutoff dates.

Submission Instructions:

The coins and medal must be submitted in the original mint sealed shipping box in order to be eligible for the pedigree.

All coins and medals submitted must be graded. You cannot choose to have only the coins graded.

If you want a set with some real potential try the 2015 silver proof set. Lowest mintage ever...no LE set to add to numbers. MCM selling for $63.50 shipped which is a few bucks over original shipped Mint price. (Just went off sale in early January)

2012 with a higher mintage sells for $200+
