I have read a ton of great info here and would first like to say thank you to everyone in the forums for being so helpful and providing so much information.
I am fairly new to CRH and have only been doing this less than a month. In this months time, I think I've begun a long term addiction.
This week, I plan on searching atleast $1000 in rolls. My question is, what should I start with ? I do look for silver and also errors. I would say that I am more interested in finding silver but a good error worth a few bucks can be great also. If I do find any errors, they would most likely be sold and the profits would buy silver to increase my silver stack.
Nickels ? Dimes ? Quarters ? Halves ?
Thanks very much in advance for the replies.

Hey Eddie, . Sounds like you have the resources for short-term CR investing. I've done a small bit of CRH of the nickels and dimes via bank boxes, all I can afford and some spare quarters, looking for just silver. That's relatively easy, just look @ the edges, the silvers pop out. After looking through $1250 dimes=1 Barber, 1 Merc & 3 Rosies ,@$500 quarters= Nada, $800 nickels=12 silvers,18 buffalos, 1-1938D. To me was slim pickings...now wasn't looking for errors, but have jar of Jeff uncatalogued RPM's. I read here all the time on others having some better luck, area of country perhaps? Others get halves in rolls and seem to do well, havent tried that. Really have to study which of the many errors there are beforehand, then seek those certain ones that strike you. Good luck yourself!

For a new time CRHer that wants to collect/invest for silver, the best is to start with Nickels! You can find War Nickels, Buffalo's, Proofs and sometimes key dates!! I don't know much about errors though. If you can, your best bet would be Halves for Silver. Next would be Nickels, Dimes and then Quarters.

You should start with nickels, they are cheap(only $2.00 per roll) and they may contain silver War Nickels or Buffalo nickels. If you are very lucky you might even find a V nickel! Pennies are also fun to CRH.

For me, I like dimes the best. The most amount of silver comes out of dime rolls. Quarters are a big flop usually.

I'm also new to CRH so my examples don't represent much. My thought is that many non-collectors are aware of the pre-1965 silver and may like LWCs. I think those same people ignore War Nickels, not knowing the silver content (on the low end, but still...). I, myself, knew of silver US coins before, but was unaware of War Nickels until a couple months ago. If you're most interested in errors and varieties, then I'd say go for cents. Nickels have very few keys comparatively. For me, anything beyond a box of cents or nickels is too much to pay at once. Happy Hunting! Edit: Like others have said, in nickels you can also find Buffalos, V's and proofs although I've had no luck so far (in 42 rolls to clarify; although, I did find a War Nickel and a 1940)

Dimes, then halves, then nickels. Over six straight years of hunting dimes, my finds averaged one silver per $150 searched. Halves, maybe one or two 40% per box. Nickels, one War Nickel per two boxes.

I like pennies to be honest. They are the cheapest, have the most per roll, and have the most errors of any coin. They're the absolute cheapest, ($0.50 per roll, $25 per box). They have wheats, sometimes Indians, sometimes dimes, many errors. The massive quantity of pennies produced allows more time for error. Not including off centers and die clashes, there's a book with over 100 pages of Lincoln Cent errors.

Good luck, Eddie! I find the volume guys end up with better luck doing halves. I did fourteen boxes of halves in about a month, and there are people here that run through that many per week! Out of those boxes, I only ended up with 2 90% and 16 40% -- I couldn't even put together a roll of silver! And dumping is a pain. I've gotten into cents recently. An early 1999 WAM got me hooked, then I started noticing errors: die chips, die breaks, a fun lamination. I'm still looking for a second coin worth grading so I don't have to send in the WAM solo.

Yea, lots of work ahead for me. I was going to get 1 box of halves but my bank didn't have a box. I also asked if there was anyone else buying boxes and they said no. Smaller town so that might be great for me. I plan on ordering 2 boxes of halves next week.
As for now, I am only 3 rolls of nickels into this hunt. Nothing significant yet bet it's still very early in this game.

the best rolls are the ones that you can get your hands on. There is luck, and there is strategy. Nice pickup of boxes, you should hopefully have some good finds in there. If there are not, dont be discouraged. Keep looking and you will find.

It takes me an evening to do five bucks in cents, so you'll be busy there. Compare your roll rates over the different denominations. I think I can at least half a box of halves in the time it takes me to do the five bucks.
