I've just recently picked up what I believe is a civil war token, its in pretty rough shape.
Were there many of these? (not issue but different "coins" from different............)
Who made them, merchants? local governments?

thanks in advance.

Post a photo of your coin. The civil war tokens were issued by merchants because of a shortage of circulation coins. There were also civil war political tokens issued by private manufacturers for profit.

There was a shortage of small change, so this became a thing. Same thing with Hard Times tokens. There are many different types.

With records not surviving from that time exact numbers are not known. Generally it is believed there are in excess of 5,000 varieties. Total tokens produced was " probably was on the long side of 50 million."
