This is another coin that my wife inherited from her father, It seems in fairly nice condition, looks like a bit of MD happening. Just wondering about the dark tone , as none of the rest are dark like this one.

In 1942 the mint changed the composition of the metal. The amount of tin in the bronze was reduced from 3% to 1/2 % to save tin which was a war resource. This caused the coins to be much brighter and more yellow in appearance, so they were darkened at the mint using sodium thiosulfate.

George VI pennies were issued from 1937 to 1940, and 1944 to 1948. Those affected by the darkening were 1944, 45 and 46. Occasionally you can find one of these pennies that somehow escaped the process.

Yes as above the term used is called Hypo .

Nice coin with slightly re cut 9 collectable and one to keep.

All the 1934 were also treated the same way.

The hypo is like lustre and more often than not the darker they are the better condition.
Easy to spot signs of wear as its obviously lighter to the high points.

You do find other years occasionally, you will also see some that have missed the treatment.

The 1946 is although common a lovely coin you have , all these were treated although you can find them without the hypo occasionally.
Also worth looking for the flaw after ONE on the 1946 as commands a premium in VF or better .
