to the family!

It doesn't look real to me, the portrait seems wrong for an ancient coin, and what is that around bust, doesn't look like writing but gibberish. Reverse symbol & whatever is off as well. Gold tone or real stuff?
Wouldn't be surprised if a bad copy, but wouldn't be 1st time wrong...only second

Yes, it's bizarre. It's part of a collection my grandfather obtained in Portugal a hundred years ago. The rest are Romans (of fakes). Wouldn't surprise me if it is a fake, just trying to learn what the heck they were faking. Thanks for the opinion.

welcome to the community

I not so sure that this is a fake. The coin resembles something from the Byzantine period. While not Byzantine it might be Vandals of Goth. I want some of our experts to check it before we write it off.

The reverse is up side down the legend looks like CON OB.

I'm moving this over to the ancient coin section.

Thank you, echizento. I was thinking this as well and have been looking at all the foederati coins I can find, but see nothing remotely like it. The characters are not Cyrilic which should rule out Bulgars. Avars? Did they make any coins? About the right time period from the style of the portrait.

It is copying a Valentinian III tremiss RIC X 3788

the question is whether it is a contemporary copy or modern fake.

Is it possible to get an edge picture from 12 o'clock on obverse ?
It looks like it may have been filed a bit at this point.
While having the appearance of a struck piece I am not entirely certain. The surface appears to have been brushed and I see a few tiny orbs which might be so called "pearls" which occur in lost wax casting (reverse center wreath about 10 o'clock) and a few possibles on obverse.
Gold casts better than any other metal by far and shrinks less to when it cools. But bubbles do form when investment (plaster) is used to make the mold and adhere to the details.
If the edge has been filed it would indicate the point where the gold was 'shot' into the mold. This leaves a stem which needs to be cut and filed smooth.

Thank you so much, Victor, you have really nailed it. At least I now know WHAT was being faked. The question is now WHY was it done so poorly. Someone who was illiterate?
I will get an edge shot up as soon as I can, altho it may be a month or so until I can do it, FVRIVS RVFVS. All help was very much appreciated.
