I just received a mailer from Downies and have seen what must be one of the most unique offerings I have ever seen and it is a LIMITED offering. The Republic of Liberia is offering an oblong coin, dated 2005, in both gold and proof silver with an ACTUAL piece of coal removed from the wreck of the TITANIC! The coins obverse, or reverse according to who you look at it, has the Titanic pictured and the tiny piece of actual artifact is embedded in the ships bunker section where the coal was actually stored. They claim the coal was recovered in the year 2000 by a recovery crew before the site was declared off limits. They are offering 25,000 gold 1/25 ounce coins and ONLY 5000 silver proofs. Actually these oblong coins are very unique compared to other world coin offerings but.....well.....I have mixed feelings on this one? Any pro's or con's out there as the prices, at this time, are not out of line! Lets hear it!!!

It's a very interesting idea, and a unique collectible. I purchased a piece of that recovered Titanic coal almost ten years ago, and it's currently retailing for twice what I paid.

Those Liberians are very entrepreneurial people. :)

If the price is right, it might be a good deal. Seems like people have always been fascinated with the Titanic. Embedding a piece of coal into a coin is different, in a way, but it's still a variation on "relic medals" where they strike them from the metal or with some of the metal of whatever is being commemorated. I have several such pieces including a Russian peace medal, supposedly struck from a melted down ICBM.

Well, I'll show them that ole Jimmy Carter
knows what he's doing.

This is one of those collectibles that will spark interest in many people. The history behind the Titanic has held people enthralled for a very long time.
