Better than almost any I have seen. Deception usually relies on enthusiasm by the party being deceived !!! As mentioned it may well be the remains of a sprue cut away beneath. Rather than using a file it can sometimes simply be broken off and disguised as a blemish. I would need to trust the seller before I made an offer on this. Report this Post to the Staff
Lucky Cuss Pillar of the Community United States 4883 Posts	Posted 02/05/2017 08:24 am Although detecting faked denariii isn't my forte, I'd comment that if counterfeit, it's fairly sophisticated from the aspects of simulated wear and edge cracks. The portrait is a poor stylistic match for authentic examples of the this type for which I can access photographs, however. This'd seem to be a prime candidate for analysis via xray fluorescence, provided the specific device is sensitive enough to identify any compositional anomalies, particularly the presence of any modern metals.
