I'm not new to coin collecting, but I have taken a recent interest in error coins, and I'm finding it's a science in itself. The main area I'm uncertain about are the double-die coins. It seems that some degree of doubling is fairly common, but doesn't necessarily qualify a coin as DDO. I know there are different degrees and variations, and the markers vary widely from coin to coin, but is there any kind of standard or rule of thumb to use when trying to distinguish between a coin that has "some doubling" and a true DDO or DDR? Take the 1917 Lincoln Cent below, for example. there is visible doubling in the "R" and "T" in liberty, the 9 and 7 in the date, and to a lesser degree, all across the motto at the top. DDO or just a coin with some doubling?

First off,a DDO or a DDR is not an error it is a variety. Research the minting process and that would help a lot. You may want to get a copy of the Cherry Pickers Guide also.Good read.

I have a Cherry Pickers Guide ordered. I don't see what good researching the minting process would do; I just want to be able to identify them. Not an error, huh? Didn't know they made those on purpose. Also, you could have pointed out that the 1917D is not recognized as a DDO "variety".

Once you have an idea of how dies are made and how coins are minted it will help tell hub doubling from non hub doubling. There are nine classes of hub doubling to learn and many more types of other doubling. I can not tell from the photo posted if the coin is a DDO or not.

They didn't make them on purpose.

I may be wrong, but a variety is where lots of the same things were made, such as the 1955 DDO cent. An error is just a single coin with a flaw.
