I have noticed that many of the the Liberty Head double eagle coins appear to be beat up, scratched, etc in the MS grades while the MS grades for the Saint Gaudens look much better. Many of the Liberty Head double head MS 61 , 62's I see just do not compare to the same MS grades of the Saint Gaudens. Is there a reason for this? Just the age of the coin?

St gaudens didn't circulate as commonly as Liberty head double Eagles. Many of the saints were stored in bags, while the Liberty ones circulated and were dinged up more likely over the years in bank bags. Also St gaudens only were around like 20 years, Liberty double Eagles were around nearly 60 or so years,

I was thinking this might be so. Thanks.

To attempt to collect a set of Liberty Head Double Eagles would be the work of a life time. I believe they are the largest set except maybe for Lincoln Penny, but there is no comparison since half the Lincolns may not be worth the copper it took to make them. Saints are equally hard to complete in set form since many from the 1920's were melted down and prices are so out of sight only Buffet or Bill Gates could afford them if he could find them.

The Liberties have much more open obverse fields where disturbance show more easily than on the Saints. Also, being older, the chances are that bags of Liberties were moved around more often in their existence than were bags of Saints, which would contribute to more surface markings.

How many Saints and/or Liberties were there in the individual bags. I understand with Morgans the bags were 1000 coins per bag. Bags must have been at least 60 lbs. I remember gold bars being sent through the USPS at one time in the post office I worked at the Tampa Airport Post Office. Bags came up missing and all heck broke loose.
The postal inspectors were accusing everyone.

If were not for the 1904 and to much lesser extent 1904-S $20 gold coins, the Liberty $20 gold would be a much tougher type coin for collectors to buy. The $20 Liberty coins are much harder to find in the Unc. grades than the St. Gaudens pieces.

Also read Frog's comments about the difference (the wide open fields) in design. They are spot on.

Thanks everyone. I just thought it was odd that there seems to be a grading double standard for a Liberty Head double eagle in a MS61 grade to have more blemishes than a Saint Gaudens in a MS61 grade. I understand how the coins are damaged, marked, etc. I am just using MS61 as an example.
