Found this while searching a bank box straight from the mint of Bison nickels... What kind of error is this, and how common? Thanks in advance!

It looks like post mint damage to me. On the horizontal scratch the side of the scratch closest to the camera looks raised, but from the other side it looks like a gouge. On the vertical scratch I can't tell. Just my thoughts.

From the pic, looks like a scratch. If your looking for the Speared Buffalo; it's a vertical Die Crack almost running the center of the coin. Yours would be nice if it was a Die crack.

Now, That is the kind of die crack that does add a premium to the coin. There might not be many more strikes left in that die before the die itself begins to shatter.

When a large and very evident die crack or break goes from rim to rim or obviously involves a portion of the die that will likely break away, you have a coin that goes beyond the minor die cracks that are often seen.

Thanks,
Bill

New speared Bison ehhh. Now that's a Die Crack. I'd pay a bit for that one. I stand corrected from the previous post thnking it was a scratch. Excellent find.

That crack reminds me of a butchers cutting chart.

I agree that's a heck of a coin and I dont think it's post-mint damage. Nice find.

Just for the record and to clarify this issue ... that's not a "speared buffalo". That buffalo has been

"BOOMERANGED"

I'll bet our Aussie friends had something to do with this.

It looks to me like something very sharp cut deeply into the coin raising the metal around the scratch...doesn't look like die cracks to me.

i also say scratched. but think you should have it checked out to make sure. seems to me with a crack that deep and as much of the coin it cover it would have broken off. I am not positive cause I have not seen one that large but I have seen where a Retained Cud fell off and left marks like that but not that much area
i would have it looked at by someone that knows more about it
