William Barber likely created this design as he was named Chief Engraver in 1869 after James Longacre died.
For me, it is hard to get excited about pattern coins for a few reasons:
1. the proposed designs were almost never adopted for use; I'd rather have a coin that circulated among the public at the time
2. patterns were often struck in multiple metals, with reeding/without reeding
3. the cost is a deterrent.A single pattern might cost $1,000+ which is a huge portion of an annual coin budget.
More power to the pattern collectors, I am not going to be a competitor.
