I feel your pain. I don't see an annealing problem there but maybe the pics don't show it well enough? I have a post that is nearly a month old without any responses for a coin that I've seen sold for nearly $1K: http://goccf.com/t/277834I don't really have an answer for you (I'm a noob) but maybe we can get some together? Grading on these nickels seems highly dependant of the first right column condition. Based on that, it's VF something. We'll see...

Thanks Stephen. In hand it does look like a so called "black Beauty". It was labeled BU on the bay but even I know that was wrong. I checked out your link but can't help you, sorry. I seen it when you first posted, but not my area of knowledge.Any guess on value? John1

Looks like there is little interest so I will say I paid 99 cents free ship from Sullivans Numismatics. John1

David put together a 'black beauty' type set, including environmentally toned nickels, but all in dark tones. I have a similar endeavor going but at this point, my specimens reside in a container waiting for the day. You might want to consider something along those lines...or just keep it in a flip for viewing.
It's all good John. There are a few of us who enjoy the different look!

These dark nickels are rather nice in hand. I pick up about 10 or 12 1959 nickels last week that were black beauties. Four or five were extremely dark and two or three were lighter in tone. I have also noticed that some of the 2015 Homestead are darker in tone. about half of one DDR in particular seems to be darker. I have not seen this mentioned anywhere though. Still Lookin

It is VERY easy to make jet black nickels. Just heat to red hot, then drop into cold water. I have had lots of fun putting these sort of deliberately Post Mint Damaged coins back into circulation. Sometimes, the checkout chicks look at them with curiousity.

If it is that easy to make one yourself, how do the TPG's tell a real one from a faked one? John1

I'm guessing that looking at the edge may offer a clue but not sure.

I was thinking only an XRF machine can tell for sure. John1

A TPG should be easily able to grade a blackened heat stressed coin quite accurately, and simply add a 'comments' - PMD.
