It could possibly be gold plating. I'll wait for experts to confirm though,
Rest in Peace

Its coated.. With jewelry "goldtone" perhaps or electroplated with high zinc/brass?
I have a few myself from CRH, not really sure specific material, novelty coin only most here would say "altered"!

I'd agree with plating. You can plate copper with zinc from solution, then heat it to melt the zinc into the outer copper layer to change the zinc plating into brass plating.

It's a copper cent, maybe it was bleached.

I've got one soaking now John1.
There are Brass-Plated cents. In 1982 the mint started plating cents with copper. When they don't change the electroplate solution often enough, dissolved zinc builds up in it. That produces a "yellowish" Brass-Plated cent. In nice condition, the value is around $50. They are about the same color as the OP's coin, but the OP's is not plated. I suppose the alloy mix could have had too much zinc in it, but it would have had to be way off. I think the more likely scenario is it was plated post mint. To find out for sure would not be cost effective.

Okay John1 I got the pics. I soaked them for an hour before they started bubbling. Two hours later they came out clean and shiny. Not yellow, just clean and shiny. The bowl and my fingers got real clean too. lol
The before, then the after:

Yes, it rules out that possibility. Sure seems to refurbish the patina though.
