If it's original, it's a great coin.
I would guess it's been in a folder for some time by the color of the obverse.

The only thing I see , ...maybe is the mint mark doesn't look the same color as the date and may have been 'tooled' but, that may just be my old eyes.
Rest in Peace

That mess in the field behind his head, do you know what that is ? If its glue you can remove it with Acetone . But I have a feeling it suffered from being in a small fire .
Other than that I would say VF-35 Details ?

Agree VF-35 details. Doubt that mess will ever clean up.

Not sure what that is either?

An acetone soak might not help but couldn't hurt.

Perhaps it is simply deteriorated lacquer or the like. I hope so.

I agree. No way I would not try. Regardless, a nice find. You do not run across a 1915-S every day.

Nice AU coin with problems though. Give a soak for 24 hours in distilled water and see if that residue lets go.
