I have five gold-plated Morgans. Does the gold-plating add or subtract from the value?

Can they be graded by a service or will they get rejected?

I think these are all common dates.

Thanks

to the forum!

From a numismatic standpoint, the plating hurts what value they would have had.

No reputable grading service would slab these.

Thanks for affirming what I thought and the welcome. I'll keep them more for novelty than anything else.

I would pay no more than the melt, and not even that. The plating hurts the value of the coins. Then again, those are probably harshly cleaned underneath the macron layer of gold.

Worse yet is they may not be Gold plated. Might be something like Brass instead. Or if you were really lucky, might be pure Gold copies but highly unlikely. I doubt they are plated in Gold. Would make little cents to use Gold to plate a Silver dollar. Regardless, worth keeping as a novelty.

coinee!

Pretty much anything done to alter an original coin destroys it's value.
Cleaning, plating, whizzing, polishing etc.

Worth more when they are UNplated, but I love 'em anyway!
