Here I am looking for some good advice on a possible buy. A co-worker of mine emailed me the following, knowing i'd be interested in his ASE's. I think this is pretty close to a good deal, but I have speek with the experts here first as always :)

Here is what he has for sale:

"What I have is the entire Mint State Silver Eagle Collection, every silver eagle ever made in the Mint State versus the proof class

what I have is
1986-----2008 MS69 NGC
2006-----2008 MS69 NGC (BURNISHED COINS)
2000 Millennium coin MS69 NGC
2006 Anniversary 3 Coin Set , this set is still UNOPENED , the 3 coins are Proof Eagle , Reverse Proof Eagle , Unserculated Burnished Eagle

being that set is still unopened it can be graded with the 20th Anniversary Holders
I am asking $1600.00 for the entire collection

with this set you will have every Mint State Silver Eagle ever made NGC MS69-------the next you will need is the 2009"

Question is, Deal or No Deal? Wife will shoot me, but she'll understand eventually ;)

A quick check of BIN prices on ebay shows that I can create this same deal for about $1250.00. No deal...

Yeah, my thoughts on that are you could buy the stuff yourself (and avoid the dreaded "milkspotting") by buying the ASE's yourself for less money. You should be able to get that set for between $1100-1300 or so. I have actually found better ASE prices at coin shows than on ebay, especially for the "rarer" ones like the 2006-W.

No Deal.

I could definitely look at these before I buy for any flaws/milkspotting, thats the best thing about this I guess. What do the unopened 2006 anniversary sets go for? I'd probably send that in to get graded and hope for a nice grade.
Rest in Peace

Neither 'Milk spotting' nor 'Milkspotting' are in the glossary. The term sorta gives me an idea of whatcha all mean......

Oh, and this sounds like expert advice.

One note on the Anniversary sets. If you want them graded at NGC as an aniversary set with the black labels on all three coins, the original wrapping must be intact for NGC to accept the fact that they have been received as such from the mint. In other words, the outer wrapping and postage would have to be uninvaded otherwise the reverse proof will be the only one that receives the black label, others will be brown. First hand experience.

Same set of circumstances apply for the recent platinum aniversary sets. I checked beforehand and took the box I received from the mint, placed it in another box and shipped it off to NGC. Came back 70/69 on rev.

Parklane64 - Milkspotting is a milky like film that develops on the surface of both uncirculated and proof ASE's, though the UNC have more problems. No one really knows what causes it, though some suspect it may be impurities in the silver or some type of contamination from the rinse at the mint. They can get pretty ugly, and I believe PCGS has a reward for anyone who can come up with a way to remove them and keep them from returning without damaging the coin...

It has wrecked many a certified coin over the years. I don't believe there is anything you can do to prevent them, but at least you can buy them without them on it if you look first.

Here is a pic of what they look like. Focus is off, but its enough to get the idea. I have several ASE's NGC certified that have developed the spots since I purchased them.

Deal-Or-No-Deal??

Hope this helps explain them..like I said, no one really knows why the show or how to prevent them.
