Yea, and more. Try to picture what die must look like to give that impression. The inside is gone as well as the outer portion and is into the base of the die.

I'll modify the above, looking again, note how lower 8 right is pushed over, this just maybe a die chip/

I'd call that a chip because it's the interior of a character. COC accepted my IIB Lincoln die break submission even though it wasn't 4 mm. They didn't take the submission of LIBERTY with multiple die chips in the lettering though.

I always weigh 1983 cents OldJoe. One day I will find one that weighs around 3.11 grams. Then I will pay off the house and buy everyone on the forum a drink.

CoinMasters, I started weighing all of my coins after I separate the copper ones out, just in case. I have it down where I can do them in small quantities (1-15 or so) at a time on my scale. I've found several coppers that slipped by.....no 1983's yet!

I might have known. It sure would be nice to come up over weight and have to pull out a 1983. I realize it's not likely, but I guess you and I will never accidentally spend one either.

Actually it is a broken post on the die. That raised area of the post that makes the incuse mark on the coin, has broken off the die. With it missing that area is now raised instead of incuse on the coin.

Does broken post mean it's not a die chip, or is broken post a specific type of die chip? I always called them die chips. In the reject LIBERTY pics I sent to Cuds on Coins, BJ Neff said they don't catalogue die chips, so I figured I had the terminology right.

The reason I mention die post is that was what broke off the die. The post that made the center rounded. A die chip is usually not on this area, but perhaps outside of devices. That is where we see them most often.
