Here's another out of my old coin whitman box. The odd thing I've racked my brains to figger it out is why are the letters INCUSE on the reverse? This starts at the last S of STATES going clockwise to the N of ONE. a big HUH? The initials are too, the memorial is still raised but looks greased. Why the partial incuse? I'm guessing sanding because coin is thinner, that would explain loss of plating, wearing down but why incuce?

Just noticed the inside walls on steps incuse?

Are the other letters raised or level? If level, then maybe coin was sanded down, then the exposed zinc oxidized and rotted out

Hmmm, rot maybe. The other letters begin raising up in other direction around coin. Maybe the zinc gets weaker UNDER the raised portion of letter so when sanded gives this effect. The areas aroundoutide would be more compressed/compacted and stronger than the raised points. Now that's making some sense of this. Probably need a metallurgist for the answer. Thank druu.
