Not sure if this should go in modern or classic forum, but...
What do you think is the MS-70 coin with the oldest date?

Depends on who graded it. There was a big hub bub when PCGS graded a circulation strike Zincoln MS-70, and I think it went for about 13k? I'm not sure if that was the first for memorial cents, or the first for circulation strikes. Of course there are ASEs that were graded MS70, but those aren't circulation strikes.

But I do think I read that is was later changed to an MS 69 for some reason.

Just did some research into it, Mark. It was downgraded to MS69RD due to spotting developing on the reverse. Oldest MS69 coin is a 1793 cent (half cent?).

Well, the question has been asked before! Sorry about that... but I didn't see any answer in the 2014 CCF post older than "I read somewhere that it is a LMC from the 1960's.". The dialog in the competing coin forum from 2009 goes into great detail about a 1963 Lincoln that was once a MS-70 but now isn't. Briefly stated, but no cite given, was that there are "4 PR-70 dimes dated 1961". Also, a link was given to the PCGS page on the 1983-S Olympic Commemorative Dollar (and there are now 15 certified by PCGS and more by NGC). Finally, in 2012, someone posted this, also without cite: Here is the list for PCGS 1964 PF70 Cent 1963 PF70 Nickel 1960 PF70 Dime 1960 PF70 Quarter 1968-S PF70 Half-Dollar Here is the list for NGC 1978-S PF70 Cent 1978-S PF70 Nickel 1976-S PF70 Dime 1964 PF70 Quarter and the next one is 1976-S 1968-S PF70 Half-Dollar and the next one is 1977-S

The ENS tv show, late night most week days, offers 70 graded IGS coins for many dates prior to those you've listed nss-52.

I skipped the PCGS proof intentionally, since you asked for MS70. I believe it was a 1963 PR70DCAM cent that went for about 41k the first time, then was bough back by PCGS for 39k the second time it was up for auction. It's since been downgraded to PR69. I don't want to link to a different forum, but google "1963 proof 70 cent PCGS," and there are results near the bottom of the first page.

it would be way easier to find a PR70 than an MS70. the difference in how each coin is produced is like night and day.
A proof coin is hand selected, inspected prior to strike, struck 2x then hand removed, and carefully handled from that point on.
Circulation coins are struck on a conveyor belt, hundreds an hour.
I don't think you should even compare the 2.

You know they publish population reports, right and there are totals right there on the page? http://www.PCGS.com/pop/detail.aspx?c=46etc. There are no cents, nickels, dimes, or quarters listed as PCGS MS-70. The first ones I see are the 2014 Kennedy halfs (Type 5, Silver, 50th Anniversary, MS) with a total over 3,700... For modern commems: 1986-D 50C Statue Of Liberty 1983-P,D & S $1 Olympic 1986-W $5 Statue Of Liberty So, for PCGS, I have to go with 1983.

OK, that's good information, for PCGS.

For PCGS, I'll see your 1983 and raise you eleven years. Here's a quote from another coin forum: Quote: (Foreign fact: A 1972-FM 10c Bahamas is the earliest MS coin currently with the PCGS MS-70 grade)
And the link to the coin: http://www.PCGS.com/pop/valueview.aspx?s=149825The same forum noted that there are two 1994 P nickels graded at MS70: http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/84132Who's going to dive further down the rabbit hole and pull out an earlier year? Date to beat (PCGS): 1972. Worth noting that I don't know if the Barbados dime is a circulation strike or not. The 1983 commemorative isn't a circulation strike, so earliest PCGS MS70 circulation strike is the 1994 nickel? (I didn't check the other denominations' population reports.)

The 1972 Bahamas 10 cent is a Franklin Mint issue, so I think that it is safe to say that it was not pulled off a conveyor belt.

Thanks, oriole. I looked into Bahamanian coinage, and you're right. I thought it was just a mint mark that I was unfamiliar with. 1994 for circulating coinage then!

Quote: A proof coin is hand selected, inspected prior to strike, struck 2x then hand removed, and carefully handled from that point on. That's the line but if you really believe that I've got this bridge.... Spot checked I would believe and proof coins are handled by automation now. Quote: 1994 for circulating coinage then! If you could find thaose two 1994's you would probably discover they are the Matte finish coins from the Thomas Jefferson Commemorative set. Back when they came out and were first slabbed they didn't have a standard terminology for them and they called them Proof, Matte Proof, MS,and SMS at various times. I'm sure the ones they call MS wound up in the business strike listings.
