Medallion? Is it depicting the Chinese year/calendar? That's what first hit me. Characters don't look right tho, like a trinket picked up at Chinese restaurant/shop made in shape of coin. Will wait for the "real" answer from the pros.!

This is a very interesting plate. Each side has 5 Chinese words and they can form 5 different meaningful sentences depending on where you start.

The part that looks like a loop appears to be scraped metal, not a loop, piece sounds silver when dropped
