1988 nickel jammed up the coin dispenser on my register at work. it's like all ground down around the edge but even and smooth I'm pretty sure its not an error but what did it? it's looks thnner when stacked but it's not, diameter is same as a regular one. thank you so so much and I'm sorry if broke any rules posti ng, just curious

yes, damaged after it left the mint, PMD. The coin was possibly freed from a coin holder where the edge was ground away to make it fit. Something like this:

YEs someone has ground away the edge no idea why, but not to put in a lucky holder, they used regular coins for those. the striking of the kucky holder did usually damage the edge of the coin but not in the way shown by the OP coin.
