My grandfather used to carry this as a good luck coin . I would like to hear thoughts on this 1909 penny

Well, whoever added that glob of metal to the reverse ruined a pretty nice looking 09 VDB.

Looks like at one time it was a stick pin. The blob is from soldering on the pin. Traces of the pin along the N show that on the finiashed pin the obverse of Lincln would be upright while wearing it. The lack of wear would indicte that once it broke off the pin it probably was not carried as a pocket piece. It wouldn't takke long as a pocket piece to produce more wear than this coin shows.

Plus also looks like at least the Obverse was plated to make it shine as you can see where some of the plating has come off.

Their is also material at the edge on the face side next to LIBERTY. hmm well this pin Theory is interesting indeed ... thank you for your reply on that .
