This date seems thicker than other 1955S types. Is this an error or just the way some were made. Any knowledge would be appreciated.

to the forum!

We need a clearer picture of the date and mint mark, but from what I can see with the image posted, it looks like you have a broken post error. Like a die chip, the post on a die will break off and leave that area filled in on a coin. Sometimes these are referred to as filled date errors.

The close up appears to be filled. Should I send this one in for grading? Does the fill in add any value?

Not worth sending to a third party grading service.
Coins like this usually don't carry much value over face, but they do sometimes sell at online auctions for a dollar or two.

EDIT: This page shows some more examples and teaches a little about die cracks and chips.

Just the sign of a worn out die, no don't send in for grading, mailing expense costs more than you'd get trying to sell it anywhere. If grading costs $100(?) or so...
The "filled date" coins were quite common in late 50's, were trying to get most out of a die before having to replace it, talk had been about changing the design around then, wanted to use up all the master sets.
