I want the ability to test my current collection of 1 oz silver bullion, to ensure it is genuine. However, because I tend to stick to only silver 1 oz bullion NCLT, which is such a narrow scope, I don't want to buy a $700 metal verification device if I can avoid it.

I have a scale for weight.
I was wondering if someone could recommend a good brand and model of an electronic caliper they use to measure both diameter and thickness.

And the follow up question is: if I take a silver NCLT (i.e. Maple Leaf, African Wildlife, Libertad, Archangel) and it:
1. Has correct weight
2. Has correct diameter
3. Has correct thickness

Can I assume that if it passes these three tests, it is very likely to be legit?

unfortunately no you cannot assume it is legit. Add in a magnetic test, and you are closer. however I think over and above all the testing you should also trust who you are buying it from.

scammers are getting better at creating fakes, you should also study your coins, know what to look for to spot signs of potential fakes.

lead-tin alloy can match the density of silver exactly. No metal matches the conductivity of pure silver so a magnet test is the easiest and best way.

Thickness is not normally a spec you can use to verify since there's generally not a mint requirement for this specification. There usually is a nominal value available for reference however.

Weight, diameter, magnet test and common sense will eliminate 99.9% of the fakes out there, particularly if you are buying government issued silver bullion from reputable sources. Don't get paranoid about it. Look at some genuine pieces and you'll soon get comfortable with your bullion.

Thanks everyone. That is what what I was looking for...

Weight, diameter and magnet = >99% probability of success of silver 1 oz coins.

I ordered a caliper and I already have a scale and a magnet.

I understand the desire to always buy from reputable sources like APMEX, but that is not always desirable to limit myself to only those sources. Relatives, garage sales, and opportunities crop up.

Read up on specific gravity. Pretty simple to do and will let you know right away if it silver.
