I have always found this error fascinating, although I dont remember it ever being discussed on the boards.

The apparent doubling on the obverse legend is Machine Doubling, but as a subtype, it would seem to match the definition/description of "Ejection Doubling" ?

The raised metal starts on "REX" and is seen on the rest of the obverse legend. There is also raised metal on the denticles above IMPERATOR and ANNO

Or slide doubling
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Interesting...but slide doubling would result in smearing of underlying elements (in this case, the letters). I dont see any smearing...
