At first glance, I thought it was a die crack on his head, but looking closer with more magnification, it appears to be a tiny split in the coin itself. Would this be PMD or could there be something else that caused this? Thanks for your help.

It looks raised; if so, I would say die crack. PMD is usually incuse since there's really no way to accidentally add material to a coin, but many ways to scratch or remove material.

Thanks Druu. It doesn't appear to be raised or incused (other than following the natural hair pattern) and I don't have enough magnification to get a really good look but it appears it is just a tiny, shallow split in the metal.
Rest in Peace

It may be a plating issue, a line bubble that because thin plating, just split? Or thin spot stretched when stamped?

Oops. In that case, I take it back. I thought it was raised! Plating issue sounds plausible. Can you see any zinc in the crack?

Crazyb0, good possibilities, thanks. Druu, I can not see any zinc.

Wow,it looked raised to me too and I thought the direction of the light was casting a shadow making it look like a split to the one side?

It looks like a die crack to me.If it was at the 12k position,it would be called a spike head.

This is a die crack. Sometimes chips will develop. Your coin is showing the die is starting to experience this. But they do get worse:
