I am a fairly new coin roll hunter and have done around 13 boxes of pennies so far. I know the obvious things to look for like wheats, but there are hundreds of errors that seem impossible to keep track of. I don't want to spend 10 hours each box making sure I get each one, so which errors are worth looking for?

As you said, there are hundreds, maybe thousands or more errors. There are too many to even list. I suggest getting an error booklet for all of them.

Hi Benja - this is a difficult question to answer.but it is asked quite often. The only way to optimize your searching (e.g. you are setting a <10 hour limit to search through 2500 cents), determining your initial requirements will be essential. Once you have your requirements established, you will need to dial in your specifications (i.e. the limits of what types of errors or varieties you want to collect). What generally happens is that the types and limits will be in fluctuation for a period until you can settle on what you ultimately want. The Cherrypicker's Guide is a good resource to establish your requirements and for listing/pictures of coins you may want to hunt for. Reading the section, "How To Use This Book" will expose you to the various types (e.g. DDOs, DDRs, RPMs, etc.) and inputs on how to establish limits (e.g. rarity, interest, eye appeal, liquidity factors) that will help you to dial in on the 'what' you are seeking. There are a number of sites on the internet for various denominations for error/variety listings, tips for collecting, variety hunting, and beyond that will broaden your knowledge. It will involve a bit of reading, but worth the investment in order to dial in on your own, key lists.

Enjoy the journey - and good luck hunting!

I agree with Rackster... and the number of errors out there can be overwhelming... Best thing to do is focus on what you like or are interested in... With cents right now, the modern coins you most want to look out for are:

1960 Small Date
1969-S Doubled Die Obverse
1970-S Small Date
1972 Doubled Die Obverse
1983 Doubled Die Reverse
1984 Doubled Ear
1992 and 1992-D Narrow AM (in America)
1995 Doubled Die Obverse
1998, 1999, and 2000 Wide AM

And they are out there. I recently found a 1970-S Small Date and I've found a couple of 1998 Wide AM coins.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
