What years do they have PL and SP strikes? C&C and Charlton says differently, and I'm not sure which is right. It is my most up to date but still an older Charlton, 2006, I haven't found a 2013 yet.

Here is my list of business strikes, barring the expensive ultra-rare errors, and not listing the 14 varieties of 1974. I hope I didn't miss anything:

1968 Voyageur
     EWL
     Small island
     No island
1969 Voyageur
1970 Manitoba
1971 British Columbia
1972 Voyageur
1973 Prince Edward Island
1974 Winnipeg
1975 Voyageur
1976 Voyageur
1977 Voyageur:
      Detached jewel
      Detached SWL
      Attached SWL
1978 Voyageur
1979 Voyageur
1980 Voyageur
1981 Voyageur
1982 Voyageur
     Constitution:
      Large jewel
      Small jewel
1983 Voyageur
1984 Voyageur
     Jacques Cartier
1985 Voyageur
1986 Voyageur

I'm sure I have a 1985 somewhere, I just haven't found where I put it yet.

If you really want to get crazy there are 19 varieties for 1974 double yokes,6 varieties for 1975 and a very nice double hub for 1978 and 3 island varieties for 1978 like the ones from 1968. If I can recall 1976 has island varieties too and most of these are found in PL Sets.

So there are two more double yokes since Ken Potter's website was last updated. That's crazy to have a bunch of varieties concentrated on one year of the entire series. Good to know chadcoins. Are those all listed in the 2013 Charlton? I probably won't get all of them, as non-circulation strikes do get expensive.

Thanks silverdon, I've apparently posted on that thread but had completely forgotten about it. Were proof, PL, and SP coins always issued as a set back then or were they also sold individually?

More than two... I wrote about VCR #21 last fall in the CN Journal.... send me a PM if you want a copy.

I think 1987 nickel dollars were only in sets, as the
Loonie was introduced that year. I am away from my books
but have a good Haxby reference that listed all sets and
singles issued by year but not with me now.

67th Edition Charlton catalogue has more varieties listed. For example, there is a short waterlines variety for 1969, attached and detached jewel variants for 1976 (the attached jewel is the tougher one) and six different reverses for 1978:

FWL (Rev-001)
FWL, Small Island (Rev-002)
FWL, No Island (Rev-003) - super scarce!! I have found six in a decade of hunting...
Broken Waterline, full island (Rev-004)
Broken Waterline, small island (Rev-005)
Modified die waterline (Rev-006)

SilverDon what's the book called? Is it the Coins of Canada catalogue? To be honest I've never taken a good look outside the circulation sections.

SPP I remember seeing a new 1974 variety skimming through the CN Journal a while back, though I didn't take note of the number. I might not try for all the 1974 varieties since that is a lot. As for the other varieties, I've noted them down, and I'll keep an eye out for them.

SlurExe97 .. SPP wrote the nickel dollar variety section for the 2013 Charlton. The Haxby referred to is Jim Haxby's "Guidebook of Canadian Coins". I have the 1st edition from last year. You can take whatever SPP says to the bank.... he's the guru.

Thanks okie, I'll keep an eye out for that book. Like the 2013 Charlton, it might be a while before I find it since it's a recent printing.

I do know that SPP is the nickel dollar expert

I have the Coins of Canada 2013 31st Edition by J.A. Haxby and
R.C. Willey, Page 275 footnote * - "The round Voyageur dollar was
issued in all three collectors' sets in 1987. This dollar was never
issued as a circulation dollar."

I'll check mine when I get home, but mine is the 2010 edition. As I mentioned I might not go for all the collector strikes but focus on a circulation set. If there's anyone who has a spare 2013 Charlton, I'll be happy to trade you another book for it.

After adding the ones mentioned here, I hope I'm not missing any, though I don't know exactly what the varieties chadcoins listed are:

1968 Voyageur
     EWL
     Small island
     No island
1969 Voyageur
      SWL
1970 Manitoba
1971 British Columbia
1972 Voyageur
1973 Prince Edward Island
1974 Winnipeg:
      *21 varieties
1975 Voyageur:
      *6 varieties
1976 Voyageur:
      Attached jewel
      Detached jewel
      *island varieties
1977 Voyageur:
      Detached jewel
      Detached SWL
      Attached SWL
1978 Voyageur:
      FWL (Rev-001)
      FWL, Small Island (Rev-002)
      FWL, No Island (Rev-003)
      Broken Waterline, full island (Rev-004)
      Broken Waterline, small island (Rev-005)
      Modified die waterline (Rev-006)
      *double hub
1979 Voyageur
1980 Voyageur
1981 Voyageur
1982 Voyageur
     Constitution:
      Large jewel
      Small jewel
1983 Voyageur
1984 Voyageur
     Jacques Cartier
1985 Voyageur
1986 Voyageur

This should explain the 1978 dollar and a great variety if you can find one.

List-Of-All-Nickel-Dollars?

This is my favorite 1975 variety dollar only found in a PL Set. These are scarce and the Charlton has yet to recognize it as a variety. Note the ghost islands in front of the canoe and the upper spike at the back of the canoe. Another distinct feature are spikes in the trees. Very surprised this one hasn't caught on with collectors yet!!
