Today I took notice of Wheatback's low-budget setup and decided to create my own. I bought a 4-pack of battery powered LED lights from Wally-World. I made cardboard/tape mounts for them to keep them vertical. My camera is still the same (an LG G3 - 13MP). I also downloaded an app for circle-cropping for free.

I used two lights opposite each other for this but will add a third in the future for brightness and shadow reduction. This is the difference between no setup (left) and a $5 setup (right):

The app is called "Round Photo." It has a short learning curve and achieved what I wanted. Fo' free, I can't complain!

I have the full set of P/D/S in the two Dansco albums which includes the satin finish 2007 through 2010 coins. In addition I have the 2007 through 2010 P's and D's in high MS business strikes. I also have the full set in OGP including all of the reverse proof releases. I do not have any of the error coins, I'm just not into that sort of thing.

I use Shape'd to crop circles. I like it, it's free, but has ads.(Which can be removed for a fee.)
Issue with circle cropping is that the coin needs to be shot head on. otherwise, you will not have a perfect circle.
Last point, your "setup" picture is beautiful, I am curious to know which is more accurate depiction of how the coin looks in hand? I know that proof coins in general can look very different even in hand based on the lighting and you you angle them. I am only trying to figure out, I if bought that coin on ebay with that picture, would I be disappointed.

I use Gimp. It is free, and the coin doesn't need to be a perfect circle.

@BigSilver

I agree with the concern. It's difficult with proofs and the mirror-like fields that tend to go black and hide small imperfections. The most noticeable marks in-hand are still visible in the right-hand pic but, you may notice on the left pic there is a color variation around the bottom of Lincoln's bust. That variation is actually on the coin and is more pronounced in-hand but the second pic completely hides that.

So for that reason at least, I think you would be disappointed buying this based on the second pic.

Thanks for the lesson. I'd wondered where and how some of these auction companies "doctored" their lot pix. Have seen some like your right photo, matte look that does indeed hide the problems, learned THAT from experience!
