Been watching these for about a year, but a 10% ebay bucks promo and an accepted best offer finally made these mine! I was going to wait until my Indo Sassanian thread reached the correct point, but had to share these early.

These are both examples of a very rare late type of Gadhaiya Paisa, which does not have an official name because it is so poorly understood. It has alternately been nicknamed the "unusual nose" or "dumbbell nose" variety. Defining characteristics are a retained late-style Gadhaiya Paisa head shape with some remnants of the beard and hat, but with an enigmatic upside down question mark shape in front of the face. The reverse shows a fire altar, but is confused and sloppy, indicating it is a separate imitation by someone who had no idea that the reverse has attendants.

Here is the much cheaper, more common variety:

(Note that the lines in the fire altar are crooked; this is unique to this type)

And this one is one of my new, most prized Indo-Sassanian coin, an early prototype with retained face!

(Note the complete lack of moon and sun... I will explain this better when my Indo Sassanian thread reaches this series.)

Feel free to chime in if you have happened across any literature on these coins... from my research, these are usually just treated as a curiosity and never given much consideration.

Fascinating coins. I find these interesting but I have so little knowledge about them that I avoid buying them. Great additions to your collection.

Thanks all!

Regarding that strange shape that everyone assumes is a nose...

I'll take a shot in the dark and say that maybe these coins don't originate in Gujarat or Malwa, but rather Southern India. Here is an AE kasu of Pallava king Perunjinga II, 1243-78:

(Tenatively attrubuted, I don't pretend to umderstand how these anepigraphic types are attributed)

The same curly shape, no?

Here it is identified as a sankh shell, an ancient South Indian royal symbol used well until the 20th century:

Just guesswork of course!

Fascinating coins, and in great shape.

First thing I thought of when seeing the second one, especially giving the lips up against the curved shape:

My thinking was the use of the sankh shell as a trumpet during religious ceremonies:
