I just found this in a roll from the bank. I'm not sure whether the plating here was removed chemically,
by abrasion, or simply wasn't there when this cent was struck. What are your thoughts?

I don't know these. I don't mess with plating errors - can't tell the real ones and don't know the fakes.

Thanks Chuck...I certainly don't know how to discern a post-mint job myself.

Hi,

It very much appears to be a genuine plating error. I don't see any evidence of the unplated area being damaged which is usually the case with a forgery.

Also, when someone tries to remove the plating chemically, they will dip the coin in something that results in either a straight line of separation along the face of the coin or all of the copper missing.

The zinc portion is almost always bubbled in appearance on a fake because an acid is used to remove the copper. I don't see that on this coin. I also see no evidence of damage on the "copper plated" portion of the coin.

All indications ( going by the photos) are that it is a real partial plating error.

I hope this helps,

Bill

Me again :-),

Someone may ask:-)about a possible scenario. The unplated planchet may have had someting like oil or grease on it that would cause the copper plating not to adhere to the zinc. Prior to striking, as the planchets are being prepared, The grease or other impurity is removed during a cleaning process.

It does look good to me:-)

Every time I think I'm done....something else pops into my head:-) Another point in favor of this coin is that if the copper were removed chemically, at some point in the past. The residue of the chemical involved would have caused corrosion to occur to the zinc portion. The excellent condition of this coin makes it easier to determine what happened to it.

Thanks,
Bill
