Kitco News kicks off coverage of the world's largest mining conference - the PDAC - with Rick Rule, CEO of Sprott U.S. Holdings, who says he remains bullish on gold. "The U.S. dollar is strong and gold is strong simultaneously. That's only happened twice before in my career and in both cases, the dollar ultimately rolled over and gold went into a sort of sling shot move," he told Daniela Cambone at the event in Toronto. "Is that going to happen this time? I don't know but if past is prologue, I think it's happening for the same reasons, so yes, I'm bullish."

It is very difficult to 'talk up' the gold bullion market convincingly, although many professionals have tried.

Gold, generally speaking, is a counter cyclical investment, and that is why it is used as a hedge.

In much the same way, the numismatic market generally is counter cyclical as well.

I have about 40 gold coins, but they have been acquired over a period of about 40 years. I have seen many ups and downs in bullion markets, and I have just sailed calmly through them all.

To me, the talking up of the gold bullion market is largely irrelevant, and is almost an exercise in futility.
