Hi everyone,
I am a newbie and was fascinated with the idea of searching rolls. However, when I went to my bank, I couldn't order halves.

Are there banks that will sell you rolls without an account? I know that ordering from the mint actually costs more than the face value for coinage so I can see why a bank without a relationship wouldn't want to do business with you.

Banks will usually sell half dollars or Eisenhower dollars that are customer rolls to get rid of them if your not a customer. Some still won't. Most will not sell you any other denomination without an account. If you want boxes of coins you will definitely have to setup an account.

Phone book and a few minutes on the telephone will likely answer your questions before you need to drive.

Banks do not order coins from the mint. Most banks order coins from the Federal Reserve, or their local "coin vault" if the bank is a locally-branded (not nationally-branded) bank. Either coin source costs the bank money when they order coin, so be aware of this and do not wear out your welcome with the bank by placing too many orders, or too large of an order.

No matter, just make calls to other branches of your bank and you may find one to order half dollars for you. Try to find one to order for you without a fee. Never pay a fee because, if your luck is like mine, then 99% of your time the "keeper" coins you find will not cover the fee.

Good Luck

So to find a roll of halves is pretty rare. I think I will call ahead like some of you said...

Thanks!

In my experience, Wells Fargo and Chase Bank are pretty good about selling rolls to people without accounts. Bank of America and CitiBank don't like to sell them to non-customers at all. US Bank is good as well, though their in-store branches often do not stock enough coin for normal CRH demands.

Smaller banks are usually hit or miss, but best to start off slow with them (i.e.: $10 in nickels, $2 in cents) and build a rapport over time with those who are good with selling non-customers coins.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
